Opening of the exhibition “The symbolic gesture”

The exhibition “The symbolic gesture” by Mercè Aragonès Mestre, born in Botarell (Baix Camp) and graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona, explores the gesture as the first creative instance and bridge between the idea and the stroke. This approach, described as an almost meditative act of active listening, promotes the creation of one’s own imaginary through a “pictorial dance”. The exhibition is structured through three creative lines: a series of engravings (drypoint, etching and lithography) with corporeal figures, living spaces and tabletops; a second line of intervened supports, where the artist rehabilitates and resituates fabrics and old-fashioned wood to generate a dialogue with the gesture; and the final series, “In that corner where”, paintings made with the encaustic technique that aim to create small corners of rooms and dim light. The whole work proposes looking at and perceiving the gesture as the essence of artistic creation and reflects on the fact of re-inhabiting, use and disuse and the need to stop and look.
